What a grand show!

We did it! In a matter of 24 hours, we installed the show, partied hard, ate a lot of cookies, and uninstalled the show! How's that for fun-a-day!?

I'll be in touch with participants shortly about getting projects back into your hands, but for now, let me share a few photos from the show. (If anybody else took some photos, please send an email to funadaypgh@gmail.com so I can link to them or post a few!)

Thanks to everybody who made a great project, and Alicia and Bree for helping install the show, and to the folks at Roboto for letting us hop on to the event, and everybody who came out to have some tea and cookies and popcorn and check out some fun stuff on a snowy night.

Art Show February 11 at the Mr. Roboto Project

Hi all,

Details are hammered out, and we have a show for you! Fun-a-Day 2012 participants will show their work for one night only, at the Mr. Roboto Project at 5106 Penn Avenue. The opening reception (snacks! drinks! art opening style!) will be from 5pm-7pm on Saturday, February 11, 2012. Come for the art and stay for the music!

The opening reception is all-ages and free!

The show is all-ages and not free, but in fact, $6, and features

Waxahatchee (Brooklyn, acoustic, check out the demo )
Run Forever (local folk punk)
Adventures (Philly/Pgh punks)

The Fate of Fun-A-Day PGH

Hey All,

So as some of you may or may not know at this point, I'm moving to Boston in mid August. While it may seem early for me to be worrying about the PGH Fun-A-Day chapter, I am. Since I didn't have a consistent partner for this year (though a bunch of awesome helpers at many integral parts of the project!!), I'm concerned about there being someone (or a group of someones) to take it over for next year.

Its not the hardest of tasks, though it does involve some flyering (both for the project, and the final show), some promotion (facebook, message boards, contacting local news outlets), coordinating (art drop offs, venue arrangements), and a few other things, though it is spread out over a few months, so its not as overwhelming as it seems typed up.

At any rate, I'm hoping to find someone soon so I can attempt to give as much advice as possible before I leave. Frankly, once I'm in Boston I'll be able to help with maybe a few questions, but I am going to be busy with school, and hopefully assisting with Boston's Fun-A-Day.

So let me know if your interested, or think you know of someone off of Facebook who would be (I'll be posting this note in other venues too). I really don't want to see this project die out just because I am leaving. It has been very rewarding over the last three years to work on it, and I think the Pittsburgh community needs it. If there ends up being more than one person interested in taking over, I'd love to hold a meeting to help coordinate people to work together!

Belated Fun-A-Day wrap up

Sorry it took me so long to post anything on here! As soon as the Fun-a-Day show was over I went to Philly for a week to relax and have much needed catch up time with my friends out there (I also got to check out the part of their show that was still hanging up, it ruled!)

At any rate the show was a great success! We had a total of 15 final projects submitted, and probably around 80 or so people came to check out everyone's work!

Whole Foods was kind enough to donate an assortment of salsa, hummus, chips and cookies for everyone to enjoy and overall the whole show felt like a really great party and celebration of what everyone had worked on.

If you were unable to take your project with you the night of the show I have them safe and sound at my house and will be allowing a time over the weekend for people to come by and grab them. Later in the week once I have a better idea of my schedule I'll post one or two times on saturday and sunday for people to get their projects.

Once again thanks everyone for making Fun-a-Day 2010 another great success!

Final show submission guidelines

So its the last day of the month and if your like me are both excited and sad to be wrapping your projects up. But the final show is right around the corner, and with that comes some rules for submitting!

There will be two drop off times at AIR (which is 518 Foreland St on the north side).
Tuesday Feb 16th between 6-9 (during open studio hours)
Wednesday Feb 17th between 4-8

If you absolutely cannot make these times it is possible that you may be able to come sometime on Thursday when we're hanging the rest of the show, or an hour before the show starts. But ideally I need everyone to stick as closely to these times as possible.

When you bring your projects make sure to have an artist's statement which should include: your name, title, medium used and any other information you feel is pertinent.
Also if you have specific instructions for how you want your project displayed/hung let us know at this time. We will do our best to honor people's requests but have to work with the limitations of the space we have.
Also we will need to make sure to get everyone's contact info at the time of the show to make sure we can get your projects back to to you, and I am possibly drafting a disclaimer as well.

If you have any specific needs for displaying your projects (is it on a computer, is it electronic in some way etc.), get in touch and we'll see what we can arrange!

Finally, we will be encouraging people to take their projects home at the end of the show. If you can't do this for some reason I will take the remaining projects to my house and will have a few hours on a specific day for people to pick them up!

The final show date and space are confirmed!

The Fun-A-Day final show will be hosted on Thursday February 18th from 6-10 at AIR (on the North Side)!! This will be at the same time as their Thursday open print studio in hopes that both activities draw attention to each other.

I am super excited about the extra space, and advertising opportunities that having it at this venue provides! In the coming weeks expect more information regarding how to drop off projects and participate in the show.

Fun-A-Day 2010 is right around the corner!

Fun-A-Day is a month long project that occurs every January and is in its third year in Pittsburgh. The concept has been slowly spreading around the country, and was started in Philly 6 years ago. For those who have never heard of the project, or just need to be refreshed the goal is to pick a project to do every day for the month of January, that you can document in some way, to motivate you to stay creative and stoked for the coldest and biggest bummer month of the year. Then in late feb/early march we will have a big art show to document how everyone spent their months!

Last year projects ranged from hand stitching a quilt a bit everyday, to eating a new snack food a day and writing a haiku about it, making a new batch of muffins a day, writing a letter a day (in various forms), learning how to do a new origami project a day, visiting a new pittsburgh place, and so much more!

Last year pittsburgh more than doubled it's participation and I'm excited to see how many more people decide to participate this year and how creative the projects get!

Fun A Day was a project that took place in January 2009 where people were encouraged to pick a project and do it every day for the entire month with documentation. Now it's time to display and celebrate everyone's work!

Some of the projects on display include: batch of muffins a day, comic book panel a day, letters to family members/friends, hand sewn quilt project, self addressed postcards a day, 12 bar blues song a day, physical activity a day, daily drawings, photo a day, origami a day, self portrait a day, and plenty more. We'll have 15+ projects

The show will happen at The Cyberpunk Apocalypse in Lawrenceville. It's a new collective writer's house/event space. Fun A Day will happen in the back house where no one is currently living.. we're gonna take the whole house and fill it with projects! We're really excited to see the final results and you should be too!

Final Art Show Details (for participants)

Hello Fun a Day Participants,

We've hammered out all of the details for the final art show. It's going to take place on Saturday, March 7th from 6-10pm. The show is going to happen at The Cyberpunk Apocalypse, a new collective writer's house/event space in Upper Lawrenceville. We're going to use an entire empty house where no one is currently living that sits behind the writer's space. We're really excited about the space and the possibilities!

The week beforehand, on Wednesday and Thursday (March 4th and 5th) we'll be hanging out at the space where you can drop of your projects anytime from 6pm to 10pm. You are welcome to display your project anyway you want. It would be helpful to write up a little artist's statement with your name and explanation of your project, too.

We're asking you to drop them off before the show on one of these days so there's time to install everything before Saturday. If you can't make it, please get in touch for other arrangements.

You're getting this e-mail because you've either expressed interest, participated in last year's Fun A Day project, or wrote us with your project idea for January 2009.

We're still in the workings of where the final art show will be held. We're sending out this e-mail to see who actually kept up with their fun a day and who would like to show their work in the art show (it'll be in late February or early March). You can show your work any way you like: if it's online you could print out your blog entry's, or bring a laptop to the show. If your project is on paper you can display it large or small. Anything else, get creative!

If you could respond back to this e-mail and say, "hey I kept up with my project and want to show my work in the art show. My project is ___________" that would be very helpful. This will give us a good idea of how many projects will be on display and what size space we'll need. Thanks for your help and participation.

Hello!

Fun A Day is going to happen again this year! Start thinking of projects and look out for flyers around the Pittsburgh area. Here's the rundown:

Pittsburgh winter bumming you out? Don't let it! Here's something to do.

Starting January 1st pick a project and do it every day for the month. It doesn't have to be hard, but it should be something to motivate you to stay creative, social, and stoked during the cold turn of the new year.

Ideas can range from something such as writing a poem every day, solving a riddle daily, taking an epic hike/bikeride, photographing a different stranger, drinking a different beer/soda a day.

Then, sometime in late February/early March there will be an art show to celebrate everyone's work. Location TBA, pending on how many people participate. More people, bigger space!

Get creative! There are no bad ideas!

Time for a little quilt square update! So my project has morphed a little, as things tend to do when your work is opening a second store, and you remember that you are in your last semester of undergrad. But it still is managing to be fun a day. I'm making progress every day, but as my project has become an unconventional quilt project, a t-shirt quilt to be exact, making one complete square a day would not be practical or even that challenging. Instead I am doing different aspects of the project every day. Some days I cut apart t-shirts, others I square them down, and now I'm working on fusing them to the interfacing. Next I'll begin cutting out the sashing and I'll actually begin piecing everything together which should go rather quikly. Overall I'm pretty pleased and feel like I feel motivated and obligated to do some amount of work everyday. Hope everyone elses projects are going well, and no one is getting discouraged by complicated circumstances. Just keep doing something, that's the point!

Peoples Ideas

Jodee-I'm going to pick a bird, animal or insect (not sure which yet) and do a drawing everyday of another part of their life from birth to death & everything in between! At the end it will be a 31 panel story of their life!

Emily- i will be going on an hour long walk everyday no matter what the weather
probably in different locales. i'm going to wear the same shoes everyday
and take a picture of them at the beginning and continue everyday until
january 30th.

Erin- I'm going to make a quilt square a day, and at the end piece it all together to have a sweet quilt. Fun-A-day will keep me warm till summer!

Leanne-i'm going to take a picture with a different person each day, then write a story/haiku about them.

Fun-A-Day PGH!

Okay first post for this, hopefully you've been directed here because of a flyer, word of mouth, or a myspace post and you’re interested in joining in the fun. Basically a bunch of our friends in Philly participate in this yearly and it seemed like a really great idea. Starting January 1st you're supposed to pick a project and do it every day for the month. Then in mid February (Saturday the 16th precisely) there will be a show of everyone who turns in their work to me (or comes to talk about it if it's not something physical, or decides to play something etc. there are no set rules really) in the first week of February.

It doesn't have to be hard, but it should be something to motivate you to stay creative, or social, or stoked during the often bummer winter months (Come on, Pittsburgh winter anyone? We have less sunny days than Seattle). Ideas can range from something intense such as writing a song every day for a month, making a mini movie, or painting etc. Do something crafty promise to knit two rows a day for a month or make a quilt square. Write a letter, write a story, write a recipe then make a zine of your work at the end. Take a picture with a new friend everyday (one of my friends got a piggy back ride from a different person everyday one January and then made a book with all the pictures). The point is get creative and it can be as hard or easy as you'd like, the point is to stay motivated, and then get to hang out with a bunch of cool people at the end.

It would be awesome if you have an idea if you could email us at funAdaypgh@gmail.com and let us know what your doing. We can then post a list of what people have in mind to inspire others who might not have ideas yet. Also, if you didn’t hear about this before January 1st feel free to start at any time, or if you miss a day here and there don’t get discouraged and stop altogether! The point is FUN.

Another good site to check out is artclash.com who are the kids that got this going in Philly. This site has pictures from the past three years of shows in Philly, and will have a running list of Philly kids ideas for stuff to do.
